18/11/03 Gold Coast preview. Strongest field ever for 2004 Uncle Tobys Hardcourts launch.
The Uncle Tobys Hardcourts promises top level action
from day one with its strongest international field to date for the
opening women’s tournament of the Australian Summer Circuit.Almost half
the world’s top thirty players, and five former winners of the
tournament, have signed up to play the event which will take place at
Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast from 4-10 January 2004. With 28
titles to her name, including the 2003 French and Wimbledon doubles
titles, top seed and 1998 champion Ai Sugiyama of Japan [world ranked
No.10] faces a formidable array of talent, including defending champion
Nathalie Dechy of France [29] and 1999 winner Switzerland’s Patty
Schnyder [23] if she is to live up to her ranking and take the title.
Such is the depth in the field that neither Dechy or Schnyder will be
among the top eight seeded players so could come head-to-head with any
of the top seeds in the opening round. Leading the intimidating pack of
six top-ranked Russians in the maindraw is 2003 French Open
semi-finalist Nadia Petrova [12], and the young 19-year-old Vera
Zvonareva [13], considered by many to be the most naturally gifted of
the rising group of young Russians currently making a name for
themselves on the Tour. Among her victories in 2003, Zvonareva defeated
Venus Williams in the fourth round of the French Open and claimed her
first WTA title at Bol. Joining them is former Australian Open
quarter-finalist and 1997 winner of the Gold Coast tournament Elena
Likhovtseva [37]; 2003 semi-finalist Elena Bovina [21] who went on to
reach the 4th round at the Australian Open; former US Open Junior
champion Lina Krasnoroutskaya [27] who defeated world No.1 Kim
Clijsters to reach the final of the Canadian Open in 2003; and Svetlana
Kuznetsova [36] who won the doubles here in 2003 with Martina
Navratilova. Leading the European contingent is Spanish veteran
Conchita Martinez [18] who finished 2003 inside the top 20 for the 13th
time in a 16-year career which has seen her win Wimbledon, reach the
final of Roland Garros and the semi finals of both the US and
Australian Opens. Alongside her is Italy’s Francesca Schiavone [20] who
was a US Open quarter Finalist in 2003 and 1999 champion Patty Schnyder
of Switzerland who reached the semi finals at the Uncle Tobys
Hardcourts in 2003. Notables in qualifying include another young rising
Russian star, 17-year-old Dinara Safina [54] - sister of former world
No.1 Marat Safin - who in July of 2003 won her second WTA title at
Palermo before going on to reach the fourth round of the US Open. Also
in the mix in Qualifying is 2000 Gold Coast winner Silvia Talaja [93]
of Croatia. "The depth and quality of the field that we have attracted
this year clearly indicates that this event is going from strength to
strength," said Geoff Pollard, President of Tennis Australia. "The
Uncle Tobys Hardcourts is a key component in the Australian Summer
Circuit and the players clearly enjoy the great facilities on offer
both on and off the court here in Queensland as they prepare for the
Australian Open. "At Tennis Australia our aim to bring top level action
to people’s doorsteps and we are helped in achieving this by the Royal
Pines Resort and by the invaluable support from the Queensland
Government through Queensland Events." The 30 players in main draw will
be competing for a total prizepool of US$170,000 and Tournament
Director Liz Smylie anticipates that it’s going to be a tough contest.
"With the strongest field in the tournament’s history it’s going to be
action from the opening round. The top seeds are going to have to be on
top form right from the outset with so many past winners and emerging
stars out to beat them," said Smylie. "This event has traditionally
given spectators an early chance to see top players such as Justine
Henin-Hardenne who have gone on to become the superstars of the sport.
We can expect the same from 2004 particularly given the group of young
Russians coming which includes players such as Vera Zvonareva and
Dinara Safina who look set to become the household names of the
future.", "With such an intimate venue where spectators are so close to
the action, combined with great ticket prices and so many of the
world’s top players, the Uncle Tobys Hardcourts represents a fantastic
opportunity to see tennis truly come to life," added Smylie.
